This is the skeleton of a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart: twelve chambers in an outer ring, each one governing one major area of your life.
The Life Palace holds "who you are." The Wealth Palace holds "how you make and spend money." The Spouse Palace holds "how you relate to a partner." The Career Palace holds "what role you play at work." The Property Palace holds "your relationship with home and real estate." The Fortune Palace holds "how you rest and what actually makes you happy."
Laid out flat, your life becomes twelve rooms. Each room has different stars living inside it, each with a different script.
The first time I saw this chart, I stared at it for a long while. Because BaZi had given me four vertical columns, and this chart handed me twelve boxes.
It took me a while to understand: BaZi and Zi Wei are two completely different coordinate systems.
BaZi is a timeline. Zi Wei is a floor plan.
This is the single most important step in understanding Zi Wei, and it's where nine out of ten people get stuck.
TIMEBaZi is a time slice.
Year, month, day, hour — four pillars cut downward through your birth moment. It answers: what time node were you born into, and therefore what energy structure do you carry? Its strength is rhythm: which decade flows, which year fights you, when to advance, when to hold.
SPACEZi Wei is a space slice.
It spreads "you" into twelve domains and reads what stars occupy each one. It answers: what is the configuration of each area of your life? Its strength is structure: how your career and relationships interact, how your money and your personality play off each other, which domains are naturally strong and which ones need outside support.
An analogy makes it click.
BaZi is a weather report: it tells you the climate zone of your next ten years, which months bring rain, when it's safe to set sail. It emphasizes when.
Zi Wei is a floor plan: it tells you how big the living room is, which way the kitchen faces, which room gets good light, which one needs an extra lamp. It emphasizes where.

One answers "when."
The other answers "where."
So you'll notice a common experience: the same person's BaZi and Zi Wei readings sound completely unrelated, yet never actually contradict each other. Of course they don't match — they were never looking at the same thing. You asked about weather, it answered with architecture. Both answers are correct.

Twelve questions. Answer them yourself before reading anything else. You'll notice something: some chambers you answer instantly, others you have to think hard about.
The ones you answer fast are usually where your natural configuration is strong. The ones you stall on are usually the areas that need outside support or haven't opened yet.
That's the first layer of using these twelve chambers: you don't even need a chart. It reveals where your attention naturally lives.
Why twelve, and not some other number
You might ask: why cut life into twelve, not eight or sixteen?
The answer lies in the calendar. Twelve comes from Jupiter's cycle and the earthly branch system. Traditional Chinese spatial division was naturally twelvefold. Zi Wei applied that twelve to life domains, and the twelve palaces were born.
This produces an interesting result: the twelve palaces form a loop, not a line.

There's no start and no end. The Life Palace sits at the center of the reading while the other eleven arrange around it like seats in a circle. You can read clockwise from the Life Palace, or jump from Wealth to Career and examine how those two speak to each other.

answer those twelve questions. Take a sheet of paper, write twelve lines, one sentence each. No chart needed — this step is entirely yours. When you're done you'll have a self-knowledge map showing which domains you have clear answers for, and which you've never once considered.

pull up a free chart and read exactly three palaces. Once you have your chart, don't read all twelve. Read three: Life Palace (who you are), Wealth Palace (you and money), Career Palace (you at work). These three are the easiest to verify. Read them and you'll immediately sense whether the chart is tracking.
